Editorial Summary

This post-series e-book consolidates Packaging World’s three-part AI webinar series into a single reference centered on knowledge transfer. It opens with the tribal knowledge crisis: as experienced operators and technicians retire, packaging lines risk losing decades of embedded troubleshooting know-how that was never written down, and the question is whether AI can capture, codify, and deliver that knowledge at the moment of need — shortening onboarding and preserving institutional memory before it walks out the door. It then separates real optimization from buzzwords, working through use cases including fill weight optimization, waste reduction, throughput improvement, OEE analysis, and predictive maintenance to show where AI is delivering measurable ROI and where results still do not match the sales deck. Finally it builds a practical framework for what each category of AI — copilots, vision AI, machine learning, predictive analytics, generative AI, and agentic AI — actually does on a packaging line, what data infrastructure each requires, and where security exposure lives. Throughout, the framing is a workforce story more than a technology one.
